According to an article this week in the Sarasota Herald Tribune, work will soon begin on the new overpass for the Legacy Trail on Laurel Rd. The overpass will span 90 feet when it is complete and will take cyclists using the Legacy Trail above the traffic on Laurel Rd. This will allow the traffic light to be eliminated and therefore pedestrians, bikers and vehicles will no longer have to stop and wait for the traffic light to change.
Construction is expected to start November 6th, with an expected completion date of the fall of 2018.
Most area residents seem to welcome this project and see it as an improvement, however there are some that look at the $3.1 million price tag and question whether it’s necessary to spend the money.
Considering the popularity of the Legacy Trail and that Sarasota County relies so heavily on tourism to drive the local economy, I think this improvement will only further enrich our area and attract even more users to this popular bike path. I know first hand from working with home buyers here in the Venice and Nokomis area, that it is very desirable to live near the Legacy Trail and there have even been a couple who have made it a condition for any house they are buying!
Here’s a video from ABC 7 Sarasota on the topic:
